Examples of Student-Led Research Projects
Project Title: Can Handholding Alleviate Shame Experiences? (CHASE)
Independent Researcher: Kylie Earing (SNC grad 2022)
Research Assistants: Carmen Yost (SNC grade 2022); Amelia Wilcox (SNC grad 2023)
Brief Description: This project used an experimental design to examine possible social regulation of shame; it examined whether holding the hand of an anonymous other while sharing a personal shame event may lessen the subjective and physiological shame response as compared with holding on to a stress ball.
Project Title: Story-Telling and Emotion (STEm)
Independent Researcher: Aidan Collins (SNC grad 2020)
Research Assistant: Alma Spitz (SNC grad 2021)
Brief Description: This project used an experimental design to compare how rumination and distraction following an individualized stressor influenced pain tolerance.
Project Title: Distress and Resilience following Trauma (DaRT)
Independent Researcher: Emily Beltran (SNC grad 2020)
Brief Description: This project recruited participants with a history of traumatic events and examined the possible differential relationships of posttraumatic stress and posttraumatic growth to memory, spirituality/religiosity, and meaning in life.
Project Title: Homesickness, Mental Health, & Expectations (HoME)
Independent Researcher: Luke Johnson (SNC grad 2021)
Brief Description: This project recruited first-semester freshmen to explore risk and resilience factors related to homesickness, as well as how homesickness may influence broader mental health and academic performance.
